The Me 262 entered service with the Luftwaffe in 1944 and was nicknamed Schwalbe (Swallow) when used as a fighter, and Sturmvogel (Stormbird) when configured as a fighter-bomber. It was powered by two Junkers Jumo 004 turbojet engines, giving it speeds of around 540 mph (870 km/h), making it far faster than any Allied piston-engined fighter of the time.
