Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. has had its annual Mary Lou Williams Women in Jazz Festival. She taught herself piano at the age of 3 and went on to write and arrange for Duke Ellington and Benny Goodman, and she was a friend, mentor, and teacher to Thelonious Monk, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Tadd Dameron, Bud Powell, and Dizzy Gillespie.
