In older Russian tanks, shells are kept in armored storage compartments. Depending on the model, either a crew member or a mechanical autoloader retrieves and loads the ammunition into the gun’s breech. Manual systems require a soldier to physically handle and insert the shell, while autoloaders perform the task automatically.
