By the 1960s, the Garland factory was processing 300,000 tons of sugar beets into 45,000 tons of sugar. Utah Sugar's water rights, dams, hydroelectric plant, and transmission lines were purchased by Utah Power & Light Company in December 1912 for $1.75 million.

Jul 31, 2024 · At the peak of Utah's sugar beet production, during the 14-year period between 1935 and 1949 (when the central receiving stations were first coming into use), Utah produced as much as seven percent of the nation's beet sugar, with an average production of 5.5 percent.

The sugar factory and production of sugar beets remained the primary economic activity in Garland until the factory was closed after the 1978 harvest. In 1990 the population of Garland stood at 1,637 people with most of the adults either retired or employed at Thiokol or the nearby La-Z-Boy chair factory.

In the early 1930s, the Utah-Idaho Sugar Company acquired the old Opera House and Social Hall in St. George for use as a sugar processing plant. The US Department of Agriculture created a sugar beet variety in the late 1928s, known as "U.S. No. 1."

The sugar beet industry, which has its beginning through Napolean Bonaparte in France in 1811 and spread to Utah through Mormon missionaries at the time of Brigham Young, had a tremendous impact on the growth of Garland.
