Our practice, and that of our many Subaru friends, is to do the Big Replacement (timing, belts, hoses, gaskets, etc. etc) at 100,000 then 200,000 etc. Everyone seems to think that’s all OK.

Apr 17, 2008 · The timing belt tensioner is a spring loaded piston which has engine oil pressure acting on it when the engine is running. The tensioner pushes against the roller which pushes against the timing belt. The Chilton’ s Repair Manual does instruct to remove this tensioner and test it under varying loads.
