There are 187 institutions that are classified as "R1: Doctoral Universities – Very high research spending and doctorate production" in the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education as of the 2025 update.

Any institution that meets the criteria for a particular category is able to be designated as an R1 institution, R2 institution, or Research College and University. Previously, the research classifications had only been open to a narrow set of doctoral-granting institutions.
