It sounds like a PC speaker beep during POST or a problem only much softer volume. I've attached a zipped mp3 of the sound. It starts this beep within a second of being connected to the PC. No spinup sound at all.

Plugging the computer into a Surge Protector helps a little but any surge in power, sudden loss of power or manual power off will loose the data on the drive.
