Ujima is a national, culturally-specific services issue resource center that provide support to and is a voice for the Black community in response to domestic, sexual and community violence.

Kwanzaa is a time of learning, family and celebration. During the week of Kwanzaa, families and communities come together to share a feast, to honor the ancestors, affirm the bonds between them, and to celebrate African and African American culture.

Established in 2015, Ujima, The National Center on Violence Against Women in the Black Community, addresses the pervasive issues of sexual assault and domestic and community violence within the Black Community.

While firmly rooted in the many traditions of African-American theatre, Ujima includes in its long history, productions from the traditions of other people of color, from other countries and cultures, and from the all-encompassing spectrum of traditional and contemporary American theatre.

Saturday, Dec. 28, marks the third day of Kwanzaa, a seven-day celebration that highlights a different principle rooted in traditional African culture. Today’s focus is on Ujima, the principle of collective work and responsibility.

The Ujima Collective exists to co-create solutions and empower those seeking to address issues impacting the Black community, including reclamation and ownership of community-led safety efforts, education, and racial equity and justice.

The Third Principle is Ujima which is a commitment to active and informed togetherness on matters of common interest. It is also recognition and respect of the fact that without collective work and struggle, progress is impossible and liberation unthinkable.
