Bright played fullback/linebacker with the Stampeders for the 1952, 1953, and part of the 1954 seasons. In 1954, the Calgary Stampeders traded him to the Edmonton Eskimos in mid-season. He enjoyed the most success of his professional football career as a member of the Eskimos.

In his first year with the team, he was named a Western All-Star as a running back. That season, he led the Western Interprovincial Football Union with 815 rushing yards.

While attending Drake University in Iowa, Johnny Bright set 20 records in football, track and field, and basketball. He was the first draft choice of the Philadelphia Eagles in 1951. During his Canadian career, Bright carried the ball 1,969 times for 10,909 yards and 70 touchdowns.
