It seems like they found an answer, as the Sox have signed Nathaniel Lowe per Jeff Passan, a first baseman who was recently designated for assignment by the Washington Nationals. Lowe, a former Silver Slugger and Gold Glove, is the man the Sox hope can provide a defensive upgrade as first, as well as some more power.
In an announcement made by the team, they revealed they claimed right-handed pitcher Julian Fernandez off waivers from the Los Angeles Dodgers and optioned him to Triple-A Rochester. Since there was a spot on the 40-man roster open, they didn't have to make a corresponding move.
