As the wildfires raged and smoke billowed across Los Angeles, officials issued air quality alerts, schools canceled classes and scientists warned about the dangerous - even fatal - consequences of wildfire smoke.

An air quality alert was issued for much of southern California on Friday, January 8, as fierce wildfires have been raging in the greater Los Angeles area amid dry conditions and high winds. The National Weather Service advised residents to remain indoors with their windows closed and to wear N95 masks if they have to go outside.

If the air quality in your area is compromised, there are several things you can do to protect yourself. Special attention should be paid to those who have compromised respiratory, lung or heart health, as well as children and older adults who are generally more vulnerable.
