Ahead of Disney and ABC’s announcement Monday afternoon that Jimmy Kimmel would return to hosting his late night show, Tom Hanks, Meryl Streep, Selena Gomez, Olivia Rodrigo and more than 400 others in the entertainment and media industry signed an open letter from the American Civil Liberties Union protesting the decision to take Kimmel off the air and warning about its potential effects on free speech.

Advocates with the ACLU Foundation of Connecticut have filed a lawsuit in federal district court that it says aims to protect freedom of speech.

The American Civil Liberties Union letter has written a letter in support of Jimmy Kimmel in the wake of his suspension at ABC. Roughly 400 celebrities have signed the letter, which has 3,859 signatures at the time of this posting. Here is the ACLU in its entirety.
