The release of the new images was delayed by the 43-day U.S. federal government shutdown, the longest in American history. Roughly 83 percent of NASA's workforce was furloughed during the 11th government shutdown, and the HiRISE images remained inaccessible until operations resumed under a continuing resolution enacted on Nov. 12.
