While the 49ers waived Martinez to make room for defensive end Clelin Ferrell, they're not planning on Martinez being gone long according to head coach Kyle Shanahan. Shanahan on Monday in a conference call said Martinez was an option to return to the practice squad. NFL Media's Ian Rapoport later reported Martinez would be rejoining the 49ers.
Martinez served as the backup to Mac Jones while Brock Purdy was out with a toe injury. He appeared in one game — the 49ers’ Nov. 2 victory over the Giants — and took a knee to end the contest. Head coach Kyle Shanahan had said on Monday that the club would like to get Martinez back if he clears waivers. Now, that’s happened.

The 49ers are dropping a running back to bring back No. 3 quarterback Adrian Martinez. San Francisco released practice-squad RB Sincere McCormick on Tuesday.
The 49ers have six players on their report with injuries, and five have no game status designation while fully practicing Friday. Only starting cornerback Deommodore Lenoir is questionable. He was added to the report as limited Thursday with a calf injury suffered in practice and did not practice Friday.
