Vanderbilt basketball is ranked No. 24 in the AP Poll, per a Monday release. The Commodores are 4-0 after defeating Eastern Kentucky and Arkansas Pine Bluff on Saturday. They received 37 votes in the poll last week, but are ranked for the first time this week.
Vanderbilt basketball showed out offensively against Arkansas-Pine Bluff, with the Commodores putting up their third 100-point performance of the season.
Mark Byington, the Vanderbilt basketball coach, went against that when he scheduled Lipscomb for the season opener Nov. 3 at Memorial Gymnasium (7 p.m. CT, SEC Network+). It will be the first time the Commodores have faced the Bisons since 2014. Vanderbilt has played other in-state opponents more recently, including Belmont and Memphis.
Vanderbilt men’s basketball put on another good offensive performance in its 92-62 win over Eastern Kentucky Wednesday night. Vanderbilt made 10 threes in the game as the Commodores also beat Eastern Kentucky defensively as well, creating 17 points off the Colonels 14 turnovers.
The Commodores (3-0) have scored in bunches in their first three games: wins over Lipscomb, Eastern Kentucky and UCF. A matchup with Arkansas-Pine Bluff (0-4) on Nov. 15 (2 p.m. CT, ESPN+) at Memorial Gymnasium figures to be more of the same. The Golden Lions have lost so far to Washington, Portland, Loyola Marymount and Oklahoma.
It wasn't in Vanderbilt's best interest to schedule an opener vs. nearby Lipscomb, but Mark Byington did it anyway. And it's good for the sport.

The three-point shot is the ultimate equalizer in basketball and has certainly become a big factor in how the sport is played at all levels in the present day. So far for Vanderbilt, the Commodores have maximized their opportunities on three-point shot opportunities, and done so at a consistently good rate through three games.
