Both Hurricanes Humberto and Imelda are nearing Bermuda as Humberto has pulled Imelda away from the U.S. east coast.
A hurricane warning remained in effect for the island, and forecasters warned Imelda could be near Category 2 strength when it nears the island later today. The National Hurricane Center said hurricane-force winds, damaging waves and flash flooding will be possible in Bermuda from Imelda.
As expected, Imelda strengthened into a hurricane Tuesday morning, Sept. 30. And it's not done yet. Some additional strengthening is forecast during the next 48 hours, according to the National Hurricane Center. The Category 1 hurricane is beginning a slow turn away from Florida, moving slowly to the northeast.
Two people have died and at least five homes have collapsed as a result of the twin storms that are turning in the Atlantic Ocean fewer than 500 miles apart.
Hurricane Imelda on Wednesday took aim at Bermuda forecast to pass by the island close to Category 2 strength, according to the National Hurricane Center.
Storm surge from the Volusia/Brevard County line in Florida to the South Santee River in South Carolina could be 1 to 2 feet. Swells generated by Imelda are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions. A high risk for life-threatening rip currents.
Five homes on North Carolina’s Outer Banks collapsed amid warnings of dangerous surf as a pair of hurricanes passed far off the U.S. East Coast, officials said Tuesday, and authorities in Bermuda said that the worst was yet to come.
