Hurricane Imelda is churning off the East Coast creating High Surf Advisories through Thursday from the Outer Banks of North Carolina down to eastern Florida, covering more than 800 miles of coastline.

Hurricane Humberto showed rapid intensification and became a Category 5 storm at the 5 p.m. Saturday advisory from the National Hurricane Center. Humberto is now a Category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale.

As expected, Imelda strengthened into a hurricane Tuesday morning, Sept. 30. And it's not done yet. Some additional strengthening is forecast during the next 48 hours, according to the National Hurricane Center. The Category 1 hurricane is beginning a slow turn away from Florida, moving slowly to the northeast.

A new Florida law, which takes effect Oct. 1, was inspired by a dog that was tied up and abandoned during Hurricane Milton.
