Shakur, also known as Joanne Chesimard, fled to Cuba after her conviction of the murder of New Jersey State Trooper Werner Foerster.

The Cuban government has announced that exiled activist Assata Shakur died in Havana on Thursday at 78. She was an activist within the Black Liberation Army.

“On September 25, 2025, American citizen Joanne Deborah Byron, ‘Assata Shakur,’ passed away in Havana, Cuba, due to health conditions and advanced age,” the ministry said in the press release.

She fled to Cuba after being convicted in the killing of a police officer but she denied shooting the officer.
