The former governor, part of New York’s political firmament for nearly half a century, finished what may be his final campaign with a bruising loss to Zohran Mamdani in the New York City mayor’s race.

Mamdani will be the youngest New York mayor in a century, NBC News projects, after a rapid rise past Andrew Cuomo and other opponents.

Trump has thrown his support behind Cuomo, escalating his efforts to galvanize opposition to frontrunner Zohran Mamdani.

The result makes Mamdani the first mayoral candidate in New York to surpass the one-million-vote mark since 1969.

The president backed Cuomo, who is running as an independent against Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani, instead of Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa.

Here’s how Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani and defeated former Gov. Andrew Cuomo performed at the polls in different parts of the city.

Republicans like President Trump, Stephen Miller and Elon Musk endorsed him ahead of New York City’s mayoral election. Stephen Colbert referred to them as “everyone New Yorkers love.”

Zohran Mamdani, who won the Democratic primary earlier this year, faces former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who is running as an independent, and perennial Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa.

The president had already offered tepid support in a CBS News interview aired on Monday, but doubled down just before the general election.

As of 6 p.m., about 1.85 million people, including early and mail-in voters, had cast ballots in the hotly contested race among Zohran Mamdani, Andrew M. Cuomo and Curtis Sliwa. Polls close at 9 p.m.
