In the first stage of syphilis, sores called chancres appear in the spot where bacteria entered the body. Most people develop one chancre, but some develop more than one.
The initial stage of syphilis is characterized by the appearance of a painless sore called a chancre. This sore usually appears at the site of infection, such as the genitals, rectum, or mouth.
Syphilis is typically spread through direct contact with a syphilis sore, known as a chancre, during vaginal, anal or oral sex. It can also be passed from a pregnant person to a child during birth.
Syphilis generally causes the same symptoms in males and females. The first stage of syphilis causes a sore known as a chancre to develop at the point of contact with another person’s sores.
(According to the Chicago Department of Public Health, there were 806 primary and secondary syphilis cases in 2022.) Nineteen, or 68%, “lacked typical syphilis symptoms,” the study says.
The chancre marks the first stage of the infection. These sores can last for 3 to 6 weeks, and may eventually go away on their own, without treatment.
On top of this, more than a third of these patients (68 per cent) hadn't experienced other symptoms typically caused by syphilis, like rashes or sores on their genitals or mouth, as reported by CNN.
