There has probably never been a film more quintessentially of its time than Purple Rain. Released 40 years ago on July 27, 1984, Prince’s semi-autobiographical movie was an undeniable hit.

“We are thrilled to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Purple Rain, a film that continues to resonate with audiences worldwide,” Prince’s eldest sister Sharon Nelson said in a statement.

Prince’s Purple Rain returns to No. 1 on the Official Soundtrack Albums chart following a remastered Blu-ray reissue and following its return to theaters.
