Thousands of jobs are set to be axed at NHS England with communications, policy, managerial and administration roles in the sights of Health Secretary Wes Streeting. Staff at the central body which runs the health service have been left shocked at the scale of change which has seen three senior directors leave as the Government seeks to cut the organisation in half.

Staff at NHS headquarters will be slashed in half as part of an overhaul by Wes Streeting. NHS England and the Department of Health has announced it will cut the number of central, office-based jobs by half.

Labour has ordered NHS England to cut up to 7,000 office-based jobs as part of a radical restructuring of the health service. Health Secretary Wes Streeting's plan will slash approximately half of all central staff positions.

As part of Streeting's move to "gain and assert much more control", the first focus will likely be on "shrinking the size" of NHS England, the body that's "in operational charge of the health service", through "deep cuts to its 13,000-strong workforce", said Denis Campbell in The Guardian.

Wes Streeting is looking at overhauling outdated NHS rules which mean taxpayers are footing the bill for hospital care which patients do not receive. The Health Secretary is understood to be considering major changes in how routine operations are financed, in the hope of making significant savings.
