Tesla, IBM and Meta Platforms helped lead most U.S. stocks higher on Thursday following a rush of profit reports from some of the country’s most influential companies. The S&P 500 rose 0.5%, as four out of every five stocks in the index climbed.

Tech companies sell the future, and few do so more determinedly than Tesla. During Wednesday night’s earnings conference call, for example, comparatively little time was spent discussing the latest vehicle numbers or the company's weaker-than-expected fourth-quarter results.

But according to CEO Elon Musk, that’s no cause for concern because Tesla’s future is all about A.I. and other non-automobile businesses. And investors seem to buy the argument—for now. Following a weaker-than-expected fourth-quarter earnings report yesterday (Jan.
