Hurricane Melissa made landfall in Jamaica on Tuesday as one of the most powerful storms in history and, while the storm has weakened, it is currently making its way toward Bermuda. The National Hurricane Center said in its latest advisory Melissa is located about 215 miles northeast of the central Bahamas with maximum sustained winds around 105 mph with higher gusts,

Category 5 Hurricane Melissa sped up early Tuesday making landfall in Jamaica around 1 p.m, tying the record for the strongest landfall in the Atlantic.

Ruth Lyn Deer, 76, rode out the storm in Cobie Ridge, a settlement about seven miles from Black River, according to Jamaican newspaper The Gleaner . The woman hunkered down inside her Food for the Poor home, which was built six years ago, and watched as the storm ripped off part of her roof and led to a sinkhole opening up in her bedroom.
