The Atlantic hurricane season ends on Nov. 30. But tropical storms can form any time, and the sea water has been staying warmer for longer.

In a worst-case scenario for the U.S., a major hurricane could hit Florida's Gulf coast, but forecasters say it would have to clear several hurdles.

Fortunately for Miami, a path to the playoff is still wide open despite falling to No. 9 on Tuesday after ranking fourth in the initial rankings. UM also fell to No. 12 in other polls.

The Hurricanes lost 28-23 to Georgia Tech on Saturday, giving them their first loss of the year and knocking them down a few pegs. They are one of 12 teams who are vying for postseason play in the first ever 12-team playoff format.
