Attorney General Pam Bondi has named the head of the Drug Enforcement Administration to be Washington’s “emergency police commissioner” as she carries out President Donald Trump’s unprecedented decision to take over the Washington police department.
U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi and Drug Enforcement Administration Administrator Terry Cole were both given authority over the MPD by Trump. Bondi was asked to "take command" of the department, while Cole was appointed as its interim federal commissioner.

The head of the DEA has been given the powers of D.C.’s police chief, part of a Trump administration law enforcement takeover that’s bringing more federal agents and National Guard troops into the city.
The position will give Cole the same authority as Metropolitan Police Chief Pamela Smith, who reports directly to Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser.
