Chantal brought heavy, flooding rain and dangerous beach conditions to the Carolinas over the weekend, setting off life-threatening flash flooding Sunday in central parts of North Carolina that killed at least one person and prompted dozens of rescues.

Tropical Storm Chantal formed from an area of low pressure near Florida and the coast of Georgia early on the Fourth of July. The storm briefly intensified over warm Gulf Stream waters and brought tropical storm rainbands over the beaches from Charleston, South Carolina northward to the Outer Banks in North Carolina through Sunday afternoon.
