This marks the first visit by an Indian prime minister to the Gulf nation in over 40 years. The last such visit occurred in 1981 when then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi travelled to Kuwait.

The ministry of external affairs said PM Narendra Modi's visit to Kuwait is expected to “open a new chapter" in India-Kuwait relations.

Modi will hold talks with the top Kuwaiti leadership, visit an Indian labour camp, address the Indian community and attend the opening ceremony of the Gulf Cup football tournament.

India, Kuwait formally established ties in 1961, but the ties go back to history. Pre-oil Kuwait had significant maritime trade with India which was the backbone of its economy.
