For the second time this year, a deep-sea oarfish has washed ashore in San Diego County, giving scientists a rare chance to study the species.

Last week, Alison Laferriere of UC San Diego’s Scripps Oceanography found a deceased 9½-foot-long specimen at Grandview Beach in Encinitas, officials said. It was just the 21st of the species documented to have washed up in California since 1901.

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Another oarfish has made its way from the deep sea to the coast of San Diego County. Scripps Institution of Oceanography researchers stumbled upon the rare fish, considered the largest vertebrate in the world’s oceans, at Grandview Beach in Encinitas last week.
