There are also three abandoned Viking settlements in Greenland that visitors can go to see how they lived. They called them "skraelings" - the native inhabitants they encountered in their new world.
But Greenland, named by Viking adventurer Erik the Red to attract settlers, has a history of human habitation that stretches back more than 4,000 years.
