U.S. figure skating phenom Ilia Malinin did a backflip in his Olympic debut, and another the next day. The controversial move was banned from competition for decades until 2024.

Many were expecting a quadruple axel, but the U.S. figure skating star completed a different move during his Olympic debut.

This is the first Olympics to feature backflips in over 25 years.

Ilia Malinin became the first person in 50 years to legally land a backflip at the Winter Olympics, doing it in the figure skating team event.
