Jubilation and celebration were in shorter supply than usual at the top end of German football this weekend. The tragic events at a Magdeburg took their toll across the country.

Magdeburg won 5-2 at Fortuna Dusseldorf in the second division on Friday but the match became a secondary matter when the news of a car ploughing into a crowded Christmas market in the central German city reached the stadium.
