At the moment, there are "no plans" for a TikTok ban in the UK, a government spokesperson said on Saturday. "We engage with all major social media companies to understand their plans for ensuring the security of UK data and to ensure they meet the high data protection and cyber security standards we expect."

TikTok's US ban has raised questions about its potential reversal and whether similar restrictions might extend to the UK.

The UK has already implemented a partial TikTok ban - since 2023 the app has been banned on official devices used by ministers and civil servants. However, this does not extend to personal devices and exemptions are made for government mobile phones where the app is needed for "work purposes".
