In response to the closures and layoffs, Workers United, which represents 12,000 baristas at 650 stores across the country, is planning “a national wave of rallies and pickets in 35 cities as they escalate their contract demands and prepare to strike” starting on Monday.
Starbucks CEO Brian Niccol announced the closures, maintaining that it is part of the brand’s $1 billion restructuring plan. The stores shutting down weren’t “what our customers and partners expect” or weren’t making money.
Starbucks plans to close six Baltimore locations as part of a nationwide effort to restructure and improve sales.
The worker protests come in the wake of an announcement this week that Starbucks is planning to close hundreds of stores and lay off close to 1,000 employees as part of a turnaround effort.
