The John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon, an annual competition that sends teams from the outskirts of Duluth to Grand Portage, has been postponed until March 2, race officials said Thursday. There isn’t enough ice and snow along the 300-mile route — or any of the alternate routes — to safely host the event.

Recent rain and warm weather has forced the postponement of the Gunflint Mail Run, the first sled dog race of the season in Minnesota, originally planned for Jan. 11. Organizers will continue to assess trail conditions and hope to run the race in February.

On Thursday, organizers announced the John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon — which was previously scheduled for late January — has been postponed to March 2 due to “unsafe” trail conditions, saying there is insufficient snow and icy terrain along the course.

For a second straight year, the weather is impacting one of Minnesota's biggest outdoor events. The John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon stretches from Duluth to Grand Portage. Last year, organizers had to cancel the race because there wasn't enough snow.

The 40th running of the race was originally scheduled to take place nearly one year ago, but organizers postponed the 2024 event until early 2025 due to unfavorable weather and dangerous trail conditions.

Unusual winter weather has yet again postponed the John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon for a second year. All three races –  the 40-miler, the 120 miler, and the 300-mile marathon – were originally scheduled for January 26.
