Northland College, an environmentally focused liberal arts institution, was a cornerstone of the Ashland community for 133 years.

Northland College Board of Trustees voted unanimously on Wednesday to permanently close the college at the end of the 2024-25 academic school year. The college was founded in 1892, being the first to fully integrate an environmental focus with its liberal arts curriculum.

The college, which was founded in 1892 in Ashland, was struggling financially amidst declining enrollment and soaring costs.

Northland College has been part of the Ashland community since 1892, however, the college voted to close this week, saying there was no viable path forward for the school.
