There are about 2,500 reported norovirus outbreaks in the U.S. each year. Norovirus, which is sometimes called the "cruise ship virus," causes more than 90% of diarrheal disease outbreaks on cruise ships, according to the CDC. However, norovirus outbreaks on cruise ships account for only a small percentage of all reported norovirus outbreaks.

An Outbreak Hits Cruise Passengers on Holland America Ship
An outbreak of norovirus has cast a shadow over the holiday plans of passengers aboard Holland America Line’s Rotterdam. During its current voyage that began on December 8, 2024, and won’t conclude until December 20, 83 passengers and 12 crew members – 5 percent of the vessel’s total capacity – have fallen ill to the highly contagious virus.

Nearly 80 people got sick in a norovirus outbreak on a Holland America Line cruise. Among the 1,923 guests on its Zuiderdam ship, 74 reported being ill during a voyage that began on Dec. 4, along with four crew members, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Their main symptoms were vomiting and diarrhea.
