Residents in one Washington, D.C., neighborhood lined up to protest the increased police presence after the White House said the number of National Guard troops in the nation’s capital would ramp up and federal officers would be on the streets around the clock.

President Donald Trump deployed the National Guard to fight crime and homelessness in Washington, D.C., but few troops were seen on Aug. 13.

A White House official said a "significantly higher" number of National Guard members are expected to arrive in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday night. The crackdown on crime in the district comes as police data shows a 26% drop in violent offenses this year.
