Federal judge extends order blocking Trump from deploying National Guard troops to Portland
A judge has extended her order blocking President Donald Trump from deploying any National Guard troops to Portland, Oregon, until Friday – keeping soldiers in the city in limbo as the legal showdown over presidential power continues.
The Trump administration reduces National Guard deployments in key cities after court rulings and pressure from local officials demanding limits on federal power.
Approximately 700 National Guard troops will remain in active duty under federal control, but will return to their home states.
In her ruling, U.S. District Court Judge Karin Immergut found President Trump “did not have a lawful basis to federalize the National Guard.”
The Trump administration has asked the U.S. Supreme Court to allow it to proceed with the Chicago-area deployment, which is currently blocked in federal court. On Monday, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals allowed the deployment in Portland to move forward, overruling a district court judge, but additional appeals are expected.
The move comes amid court battles and objections by state and local leaders to President Trump’s deployment orders.
