The U.S. Coast Guard is investigating after tar balls were seen washed up on southeast Florida beaches. The substances were reported in the Palm Beach, Pompano Beach and Deerfield Beach areas on Saturday, Petty Officer Diana Sherbs told USA TODAY in an emailed statement.

Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue announced that an oily substance on the beach has prompted lifeguards to tell beachgoers to stay out of the water from Riomar Street south to the Port Everglades inlet. That makes up about half of Fort Lauderdale’s beaches, said Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue spokesman Frank Guzman.
